I encourage my students to enter competition, recitals and also give music exams. I also encourage them to improvise on the idea or on the song. I also encourage them to listen to good music as one also learns many things by listening.. For beginning students, I typically begin with a deep dive on rudimental studies and keyboard skills on drums and mallet percussion. I gradually introduce notation and music literacy tools to improve the students understanding of how the fundamentals of music interact with one another. I use a lot of rote teaching methods as well to take full advantage of how physical percussion and drums can be. The student and I (and parent when appropriate) will regularly speak about their goals and aspirations, as well as discuss both long- and short-term plans. All students will study scales, intervallic leaps, and learn base-level physics about the clarinet and its partials.
