To me it is very important to balance the technical and creative aspects of development. No matter what age/skill level I split time during lessons into activities that develop technique and language, and compositional, creative activities that help each student explore their instrument and what they have to say with it. This balance can be altered depending on the interests of the student or parent. The short cut to playing the clarinet like a pro is actually the long way done properly. In other words, there are no short cuts. We will work with patience, persistence, and of course, with a metronome. We will set written goals and come up with reward systems. You cannot have one without the other and even when I am teaching proper technique I work to make sure the student is being their most natural self, physically, mentally and musically.
