While fairly new to teaching private lessons, I have taught musicians I have played with and other family members, friends, and others. I have encouraged everyone I have taught practical uses of the instrument that relates the music theory found in specific genres to more comprehensible techniques to use on the guitar. I take popular songs that are familiar to the student, and use the songwriting to help show the practicality and musical nature of theory. Read More

Everything stems from the goal(s) set. We work out a plan to reach those goals and a realistic pace to move at. I also leave room for and expect a moving goal post. Inspiration is heavy the more concepts are successfully explored and understood. I expect the best from my students; nothing more, nothing less. We will not downplay accomplishments or progress, especially when things take longer than expected. Read More

I start beginners off with Frances Clark, The Music Tree Series. I also use the Faber-Faber Piano Adventures and Helen Marlais' Succeeding at the Piano. As students progress, I focus on repertoire pieces issuing from the baroque, classical, romantic, and modern eras as to introduce students to the history of music. Important components of home-practice include sight-reading and technique-building exercises. I also encourage sight-singing as a way of developing the student's ear. Read More

For beginner's I tend to start with lesson books, especially Hal Leonard's Essential Elements because that's what I learned from! I move up from there and like to teach lessons from all different types of genre's and also teach different techniques such as vibrato, jazz flute, etc. Scales and warm-up's are an essential part of every lesson and I always do them no matter what age student I am teaching! There really is no limit to which methods work for people. Every person learns their own way, and it is true that a variety of methods work for an individuals learning process. I enjoy employing all ways of experiencing music including playing by ear, reading sheet music, learning music theory and its practical applications, as well as playing with others and truly feeling what the music is wanting to say. I began teaching guitar lessons in my home studio while I was still in college. I encourage frequent practice on a consistent schedule. When I began playing as a teenager, I practiced for up to 11 hours each day. There is no way that I could expect any of my students to possibly do that, but I do stress the importance of practicing often while keeping things fun. I also encourage my students to keep an open mind and listen to all genres of music, as there is something that can be learned from each genre, from metal to jazz to classical. Read More
