Then, we move on to the basics of maintaining proper form, understanding rhythm, and practicing simple exercises to ensure they start off with the right foundation. I like to teach the way I practice. In a "perfect" practice day I would pick a "mode" or specific scale (1/2 step, whole step) and play around this "idea" with a metronome. I practice in as many tonal centers as possible (out of 12). I try to find motives and rhthyms to repeat or change (must hear what's to be played before if possible). For young children (3-9) I exclusively use the Suzuki method and require a lot of parental involvement. I am happy to start children ages 10+ as well as teenagers. Having been a product of a school orchestra myself, I will use a more traditional teaching approach. The adult beginner or adult returner presents unique challenges but I wholeheartedly believe its never too late to start playing an instrument.
