My methods vary from student to student, but a constant in my methodology is doing what I can to make the student fall in love with the instrument in their own way. Some students progress better with curriculum and disciplines right off the bat, while others need the instrument as more of an expression and an outlet, so Ive learned to respect that. If the student seems to take interests in the disciplines of the instrument right from the start, my go-to curriculum for guitar is Mel Bay. Read More

My approach is twofold: addressing the mind and addressing the body. I always have beginners learn how to stretch and release tension before they even sing, just like any athlete would. I have them develop a pre-singing routine including these stretches so they can both prepare themselves physically and mentally for every lesson and practice session. Then, I teach them basic warmups which help them build an awareness of their breath and where their body is in space. Read More

I have been teaching students for many years and love the challenge of developing new students into musicians that can be proud of their art. While attending EKU I studied percussion under Dr. Jason Koontz and was involved in numerous ensembles including the Percussion Ensemble, the Steel Band Ensemble, the African Drum and Dance Ensemble, the Marching Band, and more. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Burnam's A Dozeon A Day and Faber's Piano Adventures. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For students who take ABRSM exam, I will not only focus on playing of three repertoire, but also the skills of sight-playing and ear-training. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

In my experience, this can be very encouraging and inspirational for students, especially when they've been frustrated with their progress or are worried because they don't believe they can play at the level they want. Over the past 4 years of teaching students, I believe my greatest strength is inspiring students to be the best they can, and learning to disregard what others may think, because music is all about your enjoyment!
