I began teaching piano my sophomore year of college. During my college career, I built up a studio of nearly 20 students, tutored college-level piano courses, and worked as a Teacher's Assistant in Sight Singing and Aural Training. Since then, I taught for two years at a Summer Music Conservatory in Texas, led week-long keyboard intensive seminars throughout Western Kenya, and most recently, taught at the nation's largest piano conservatory. After their lesson, we come up with a game plan together for their practice sessions in the coming week, including identifying which issues need to be worked on at home and how to do so. If the student is having a hard time finding interest in the instrument through disciplines, I start them off with various ear training games to get them to make connections between the music inside of them and the guitar or bass as a constructive outlet. This generally creates a foundation that has room for disciplines. For more intermediate students, I generally try to get in perspective with the music tastes that they have begun to develop and teach the foundational skills of the instrument within that context. For beginning students I believe a foundation in learning the notes on the instrument is important, as well as matching up those notes to the paper. A solid theory application is appropriate. For intermediate and advanced level students developing a style and interpretation of music is how to grow exponentially. I make sure that each student has at least one goal for each lesson and I make sure to acknowledge their accomplishments.
