Ive been teaching private saxophone lessons for 3 years. Ive developed a simple method to customize each students practice routine. Students are all different and have different strengths and weaknesses. Its very important for musicians to be honest with themselves about their struggles in music. I help direct their focus and plan a written practice log in their own notebook. Writing down goals and achievements weekly helps motivate students and keeps them practicing. Read More
Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet
I've been a serious musician since taking up (baritone) saxophone at age 13, over 40 years ago. I first took up clarinet at 10, and later added flute, but saxophone has been my main focus over the years. I play around the Austin area in a variety of settings from big bands to musicals to rock/blues groups to studio recording to classical ensembles; pretty much whatever is asked for. Some of my previous teachers include Jim Riggs at the University of North Texas, Harvey Pittel at the University of Texas, Jeff Elwood at California State University Fullerton, and Joe Eckert at TCU. I've been playing music for most of my life. Growing up my whole family would all gather around the piano while my father played. Seeing how inspiring and influential music could be at a young age helped me to develop a passion for it. I am very grateful to share my passion with others through teaching. I specialize in teaching improvisational styles, such as blues, jazz, and funk. I work with my students to create a good balance of a strong technical foundation and creative jamming skills which builds both the intellectual and intuitive sides of music, and helps them become well-rounded musicians. On the first lesson you will set short and long term goals you would like to achieve on your playing, and I will then design a lesson plan to achieve those goals. From there on each lesson will be a fun and challenging workshop in which I will help you gain technique and musicality in your favorite music styles, always working toward your goals. Each lesson generally starts off with some assigned work from the previous lesson and then we move on to technique/reading skills exercises. Read More

I've been teaching in a number of different situations for about 4 years now. I first began teaching in 2010 when I worked at the Magik Children's Theater in San Antonio as an instructor for a School of Rock class there. In this class, I taught beginning students on guitar, bass, keys, and drums how to play popular rock songs. I worked at the Magik Children's Theater for 2 years before moving to California where I worked as a Teaching Assistant and a full time instructor for a number of theory/musicianship classes at the California Institute of the Arts.
