For children and other beginners, I would start our lessons by encoding the basic function of music theory application of a drum pad. This will allow stick control and muscle memory to begin developing. As the beginner becomes more of a novice, I will introduce simple and repetitive songs and go over them as whole pieces. At each lesson, I try to touch on different components of musicality. Beginning with tone and technique, posture and proper warm up. Then we work on pieces of music and incorporating theory, and playing musically. It is important as a teacher to set realistic goals for my students, acknowledge their accomplishments and to find out what inspires them. With thses methods I cnan engage the student with the music while they use their mind and body to learn the basics of music.
