As a multi-instrumentalists, I use a cross disciplinary approach even when a student is only learning one instrument. I do make use of method books for beginners, and the specific book depends upon the instrument, but I have my own methods and materials which I utilize in my lessons. Building a repertoire is encouraged, and I use the material to assist in instructing in theory and musical communication. My students are taught to be self-sufficient, by way of practice, study, and cultivating an "ear." Read More

The way I learned is the way I teach. I was taught the same way multiple ways and because of this I can give students different avenues to learn the same thing. So if they don't understand it in A, or B, I still have C, and D as a back up. I try to include the student to help navigate their own lesson plan and figure out what they want to focus on. Read More

I also like to do rhythm exercises with my younger students for example I will clap a rhythm and have them clap it back to me. I will assign repertoire that is appropriate for their level. An example of this could be the little mermaid song 'Part of Your World'. If I am teaching an intermediate student I will do warm ups up and down the octaves on vowels e-eh-ah-oh-ooh, I will also do staccato exercises as well as teaching breathing techniques. Read More

For beginning students, what I start with generally depends on what instrument they play, but in general, I use various "Essentials" books. As the student progresses past the fundamentals of music and playing their instrument, I will move on to more advanced or technical musical exercises, as well as solo repertoire if the student is looking to perform for a recital, NYSSMA, etc. My teaching style for older, more advanced students is relatively the same, excluding the "Essentials" and fundamentals. Lessons are structured: 1. Check the homework. 2. Work on mistakes and problems, then proceed to the new segment, if possible. 3. Detail and start practicing a new segment. Questions from the student and clarifications of them. 4. Write down the homework together with the student, focusing on goals, time and amount of practicing. Ask the student to repeat the homework out-loud. 5. Practical theory at the piano, practical exercises for fingers and technical skills from the day one. 6. Read More

Teaching students to play and enjoy music is extremely rewarding for me, and I love to help children and adults discover and develop their musical talents. I am a patient, positive teacher who seeks to challenge students to put forth their best effort and perform to their potential. I foster an intristic love of music to motivate my students, so that their playing (including practice time) becomes enjoyable. My instruction takes into consideration factors such as learning disabilities and developmental needs that are critical to students' success. Read More
