I've been teaching all kids and adults for over 15 years. I 'm awesome with kids (so the parents have told me!)... I don't adhere to any rigid format. I work with what level and progression suits you, and I'm super-easy to get along with. Also, I believe in positive reinforcement. There are some old school teachers who sometimes degrade a pupil when they're not doing an exercise correctly. For beginning students I typically use Piano Adventures by Faber and Faber. This lesson series helps to ensure each student gets a well rounded music education. For those with previous experience, I will get to know where they're at in their knowledge and ability as well as which music interests them, and we go from there. For beginning students, I typically use one method book and one book of simple melodies.  My preferred method book is the Rubank series. The method book teaches the basics, while the melodies and songs keep things fresh and interesting for the student so they want to continue.  For advanced students, I find significant, staple pieces that any advanced musician should have in their repertoire.  This keeps the student engaged, and prepares them for anything down the road in their musical careers. As a multi-instrumentalists, I use a cross disciplinary approach even when a student is only learning one instrument. I do make use of method books for beginners, and the specific book depends upon the instrument, but I have my own methods and materials which I utilize in my lessons. Building a repertoire is encouraged, and I use the material to assist in instructing in theory and musical communication. My students are taught to be self-sufficient, by way of practice, study, and cultivating an "ear." Read More

Goals are incredibly important to keep focused. Whether someone is preparing for a NYSSMA exam, an audition of any sort, a performance, or a competition, having a clear understanding of how long something will take to learn and how long you have is crucial! I am an advocate of teaching a student as early as possible how to practice to be successful. I like to use a method book as well as a book of short pieces to get a student started. Read More
