I started giving private lessons out my freshman year of college 5 years ago. During that time I had students from my previous high school and junior high. Both age groups gave me the chance to find ways to help different levels of playing and what to focus on with different levels of playing and understanding of the horn. For the younger, beginning junior high students I would work on exercises their band teacher had given to them and their playing posture and breathing. Read More

I use humor and my own experiences to first establish a caring environment in which the student can be comfortable. Once that connection is established, I like to find out the students interests and make sure a personal goal is set that we can achieve together. There has to be something exciting the student can achieve in order to develop self-motivation. I employ a number of tactics to stimulate self-expression and problem solving skills, as independent work and practice is crucial in any musician's journey. Read More

for the beginner student, we will start off by going through things such as scales, arpeggios, and exercises to build a solid foundation. While doing this, I will have the student pick a song they like, whether it be pop, country, jazz, classical, and begin to learn it by ear to begin to develop solid aural recognition. Once the fundamentals are solid, we will move on to either working on a sonata or concerto or a transcription and a tune (depending on if you are a jazz student or classical). Read More

My methods are pretty simple. The basic fundamentals are something every student needs to have a firm grasp of. Even when youre advanced, practicing these things is something that never stops. So a healthy dose of stick control exercises, as well as covering different hand positioning, grips, your setup in relation to your height and reach, foot exercises, dynamics, drum tuning, and how to utilize your practice time effectively is something Ill cover with all beginner to intermediate students. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn.
