I love teaching and finding ways to motivate and get my students excited about learning and progressing on their instrument. I began teaching students during my undergraduate degree. I've taught over 50 students, grades ranging from 6-12, throughout my undergrad degree. My goal in the music profession is to become a trumpet professor at the collegiate level and have my own trumpet studio. In my lessons, I focus on all aspects of your trumpet skills: technique, musicality, sight reading, and tone to name a few. For young beginners I start them in the Alfred Basics Books. I work to help students learn their notes quickly. I think that it is extremely important that students learn to read the notes from the staff and correlate staff reading with the notes on the piano. I give each of my students an exercise to begin their practicing each day. This exercise includes scales, arpeggios, cadences, transposing and sight reading. Read More

What technique do I use? Nowadays it is fashionable to use the name of a technique as if that was everything. I like to see singing from another point of view, based on the full awareness of the vocal tract. Learn to control the muscles involved in phonation (and relax those who do not!). For young beginners, I generally teach from the Nancy and Randall Faber Piano Adventure series, however I have recently been working to become more familiar with other options in order to best accomodate individual students. I am now also familiar with Alfred's Piano Method books, as well as the Hal Leonard series for young students. I have also taught by books from the same composers for an older beginner. I am a great fan of recitals, and as I build my studio I will collaborate with fellow piano teachers in the area to hold them. Read More

I may also challenge students to justify their answers and consider a completely different solution. Regardless of what solution works, the humility of accepting possibility of an answer completely different from your own is important to me. Different days may require different solutions, and as a result a lot of ideas will be shared. Once we find something that does work, I like to have the student try to teach me what they have learned so I can see how deep a concept has been engrained. Read More

Much of my approach to teaching is determined by the individual student. I want my students to be the best musicians they can be, and that does require a certain amount of pressure. To the extent that I can for each, I push my students to progress quickly. It can get boring to practice the same piece over and over without variation, so practicing is required.
