I started teaching privately in 2010 as part of a class assignment, and discovered I really enjoy doing it. I also love teaching and conducting choirs and have done that in various capacities for the past several years. I really believe that singing in choir is the best vocal training for young students. In 2011, I accepted the position of Visual Caption Head with Weber State Indoor Percussion and helped them win back to back Outstanding Visual Caption awards at the Intermountain Percussion Association Championships. I also trained the 2010 Drum Corps International Drum Majors of the Year for both Open and World Class. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I have high expectations in y studio, but I make it clear that students will progress at different speeds and that’s okay. Every week I give a set of warm-ups and exercises to focus on and expect students to practice so we can hone them when we’re together, but I’ll never ask a student to do something they’re not comfortable or familiar with - if ever there’s a question I’m there to answer or demonstrate.
