I have been teaching the flute for many years, dating back to my undergraduate college days. I taught several students that were looking to audition at the school I was at and needed additional help. I have also taught at a summer flute day camp in Michigan for 7 years, working with middle school, high school, and adult students. As an avid practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism, I have often to my ecstatic wonderment found patterned sychronocities between this sort of brilliant visceral teaching various aspects of Tibetan Buddhism,(particularly the practice of Shamatha and elements of Visualisation), Eastern Energetic practices and spacial/temporal awareness—playing with various methods of getting out of the body to become the rhythm and structure a phrase. Similar to what is written above I prefer an approach that is rooted in the fundamentals. It is my belief that learning these well can serve a student later on when the music starts to become more difficult. Most students I have that have learned in this way tend to not get overwhelmed and are able to transition to higher levels of playing more easily. My main music philosophy is to teach sound before sight: teach students to hear the music, and then read the notation. For beginners, I want them to become well acquainted with their instrument so I begin with the basic fundamentals, and then teach some traditional tunes before moving on to reading music. For students who can already read music, I like to work on sight-reading as well as finding solo repertoire that can be performed at recitals. Read More

I am an avid music lover, performer, and teacher. I was lucky to study piano from a young age and have the amazing pre-collegiate experiences of appearing on MTV's Made and opening for the likes of McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, and Bela Fleck.
