During my 27-year tenure as Assistant Chair of the Voice Department at Berklee College of Music in Boston, I instituted courses for teaching singers all styles of jazz and contemporary music. For beginning students, I start teaching fundamentals through the Rubank Essential Elements book. As students move toward intermediate-advanced levels I introduce the Jeanne Baxtresser book of Orchestral Excerpts and the Taffanel-Gaubert book for technique. I bring in a piece each lesson for sight-reading practice to encourage students to read music on their toes. Additionally, through practicing scales, students learn music theory and notation. At the end of each lesson, I give students a musical goal for their next lesson to motivate active participation in their learning process. Read More

During my time at The Berklee College of Music I took classes in pedagogy, and every teacher I have had the pleasure of studying with has functioned as an invaluable model for how to teach, and the many different ways to articulate and illuminate the nuances of playing the guitar, and playing music. I also have experience teaching large and diverse groups of students and have worked as a clinician at music festivals and music camps such as North Hampton, MA's 'Django in June' where I was hired to teach in 2009, 2010, and 2012. I did not specificly stick to particular music series in the market as I believe it is best to choose the music books that match with the age, personality and learning style of a student. I had started with Alfred, Faber and Hal Leobard for my young beginners. I will also introduce students with Suzuki methods if I think this is a better fit.As for later or adult beginners, I used Faber, Alfred, and John Thompson series as the starting material, and give instructions along with the students' interest.
