For beginning students who are children, I usually would like to encourage them starts to play with little simple songs, likes many of songs they already can singing with. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. When i teach a student who is just starting on a string instrument and has never played before i usually start them with the Suzuki books and cds. I find having a cd or recording to listen to and play along with is a great help. Other books i use with beginners in addition to the Suzuki books that have recordings too are Solos For Young Violinists, solos for young violists, and Fiddle Sessions by Charlie Hall, and Bela Bartok's 44 violin duets. For young children, i would start by showing them Twinkle Twinkle, once the student is able to hold the violin and bow upright without my help, and they understand the basics of violin. For children and adults, i would start with the book A Tune A Day, cause it teaches the basics of playing the violin such as simple scales and arpeggios, and will allow the student to make progress with each song they learn. I am not Suzuki-certified, however my teaching style does include a mix of Suzuki and independent materials. I like to teach music theory skills concurrently with technical lessons so that students can reinforce their practical training.
