I believe in teaching time management from the start. I will start with a small weekly practice goal, and as the students progress, that goal will increase. Another part of time management is not over- assigning music to practice. At first, I expect the student to practice 2-3 small songs. For a beginner vocalist, I will always begin with standard bel canto vocalises. These promote, first and foremost, the health of the voice. They also build flexibility, agility, and suppleness within the vocal cords. As students advance, these vocalises become more and more advanced. The technique built in the vocalises eventually infiltrates a singers' repertoire, and appropriate repertoire choices are extremely important and made thoughtfully. Each student is unique, and my teaching style changes to accommodate differences in age, musical background, musical interests, and goals. I like to be encouraging and positive in lessons! I also like to maintain a certain standard :)! I think developing consistency in practice even if it starts at 15 mins a day is key to success. There is a lot of muscle memory and training involve and it requires consistency. I do my best to set realistic and clear weekly goals for each student and encourage them along the way! I find if one is consistent with practice, usually within a semester (6 months) or earlier, one can play their first song and feel comfortable to perform in public within 1 years time! Read More

My goal with my students is to tailor a specific lesson plan for that individual's musical needs. Some of my favorite books to use though are the Rubank series. I find this to be a very good book to help grasp the fundamentals of the instrument for beginning players.
