I follow the Suzuki method for beginner students, with some additional instruction to learn to read sheet music for those with previous music experience or older students who are ready to begin reading music. After the student has completed the first several books of the Suzuki method, I include selections from Solos for Young Violinists and other solo pieces as appropriate to reinforce certain skills. Each person is different. Because of this, I always make sure each student is going at their own pace. At the beginning of the year, I sit down with each student and we set goals for our playing. I want students to feel motivated and inspired always, and to practice because they love it- not because they feel forced. I have competitions within the studios to motivate practicing, and talk about what we can do at home to make the violin/viola more fun. Read More

For young beginners I start them in the Alfred Basics Books. I work to help students learn their notes quickly. I think that it is extremely important that students learn to read the notes from the staff and correlate staff reading with the notes on the piano. I give each of my students an exercise to begin their practicing each day. This exercise includes scales, arpeggios, cadences, transposing and sight reading. Read More

I began teaching in 2016, and instantly fell in love with helping others learn a new skill! I think it is important to work together with my students (and their parents) to create a safe environment for learning and growth. I enjoy being able to cater my lessons to each individual student and find teaching styles that work well for them. I teach music the same way language is learned, as both involve learning to listen, speak, write, and read. I start students off with the skill of listening as I demonstrate how the instrument is played, and then move them into "speaking" by guiding them in the basics of technique that will allow them to begin producing basic sounds. As the student learns to create original musical ideas, I help them learn how to write them down in musical notation, which ultimately serves their ability to read music. Read More

A few years ago, I taught the piano for approximately three years. I stopped teaching for a while in order to pursue my Bachelor's Degree - beginning at Dixie State University, and I am now working to build my clientele again. I absolutely love to teach. One of my favorite moments with every students happens at around the 4th or 5th lesson, when the student then feels comfortable enough to begin to discuss with me some of their goals with the piano.
