I graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Vocal Music Education in 2010, and am almost finished with my doctorate in choral conducting. I have been singing in choirs since I was in fifth grade and studying voice privately since 2000. I've had the opportunity to travel the world singing in choirs. At the beginning of a lesson, I like to begin with something fun that the student has been working on. This could be a performance piece, some improvisational composition, or another activity related to the piano. As we go along, I like to branch into the theory behind what we are doing. Once they have a firm grasp on the basics, I like to begin students fairly quickly into learning the circle of fourths, and the scales and chords following the order of the circle of fourths. I have been consistently teaching students in their homes since then, with the most students since graduating from college. I began teaching students during my undergraduate degree. I've taught over 50 students, grades ranging from 6-12, throughout my undergrad degree. My goal in the music profession is to become a trumpet professor at the collegiate level and have my own trumpet studio. In my lessons, I focus on all aspects of your trumpet skills: technique, musicality, sight reading, and tone to name a few. Much of my approach to teaching is determined by the individual student. I want my students to be the best musicians they can be, and that does require a certain amount of pressure. To the extent that I can for each, I push my students to progress quickly. It can get boring to practice the same piece over and over without variation, so practicing is required.
