My favorite part about teaching is teaching beginners. It's so much fun to introduce a brand new instrument to someone and show them all that learning music has to offer. I mainly focus on the basics of music, and music theory in order to give students the tools they need to teach themselves when I'm not around, or if lessons have to discontinue for some reason. I like playing games and playing through music with the student. I have flash cards, sometimes we play concentration, war, find it on the keyboard, spoons, relay races. We use gross motor skills, with big floor keyboard, dance, etc. Sometimes we do note speller things, technique learning from books. Sometimes I record them so they can see their own progress. We adjust, we just have fun.When they start spelling words with note names and are able to write and find them on the keyboard and on the staff, then we begin composing our own music. Read More

What technique do I use? Nowadays it is fashionable to use the name of a technique as if that was everything. I like to see singing from another point of view, based on the full awareness of the vocal tract. Learn to control the muscles involved in phonation (and relax those who do not!). Who doesn't like to feel good about themselves? My experiences have shown me that students who achieve successes with their music feel that way. They are better people and they are better musicians. I have taught high school students who went from having no identity in the student body society to becoming proud of themselves, walking the halls with their heads held high and a smile on their faces.
