For beginners I usually start with a simple melody or riff. I love teaching Painting Black by The Rolling Stones because it is simple to play. Not only that, but it's a song that's easy to identify for most people's ear. I usually take my time allowing the student to learn. One or a few hours are enough to start learning the song. For beginning students, I teach them the basics first, and then simple and fun pieces that they can master.  For intermediate students, I start them on method books and more advanced techniques.  With advanced students, I help them refine their playing and personalize each piece that they learn. This makes it far more enjoyable for The student, as well as more relevant.
