I taught my first trombone lessons when I was still in high school, and I've always felt a strong connection to teaching (my parents are teachers too). When I was getting my masters, I began teaching beginning brass classes at local elementary schools, and this expanded into several elementary band classes upon graduation. I usually start with a beginners book for children or adults.  We go through the lessons at their own speed.  As for practicing the scales, I do not introduce them until the students is thoroughly familiar with the keys (the alphabet of the keys.)  For adults I introduce the scales and arpeggios much earlier. For beginning students, I teach them the basics first, and then simple and fun pieces that they can master.  For intermediate students, I start them on method books and more advanced techniques.  With advanced students, I help them refine their playing and personalize each piece that they learn. This makes it far more enjoyable for The student, as well as more relevant. When meeting a new student I like to take the time to know about them. Such as their Hobbies, what kind of music they like, what attracts them to the flute , what kind of future career they are interested in taking and what they hope to achieve from taking lessons. From there I can cater my teaching style to fit their needs. Each student learns at a different pace and I want to set goals each week for us to achieve as a team that are realistic and do my best to motivate my students to work hard to achieve them.
