I am a Chicago-based freelance Trombonist who recently graduated from DePaul University in 2021. Since I began my college career in Chicago, my professional music career started up simultaneously. Since 2017, I've played in a wide variety of ensembles around town. These ensembles / genres include: Wedding Bands, Jazz, Big Band, Classical, Funk, Hip-Hop, Afrobeat, Salsa, Rap, House, Fusion and more. College was where I learned how to teach and play strings, woodwinds, percussion, voice, and piano in addition to brass. Each student will start off with warmups, even if they have warmed up themselves, so I can gauge how their voice is working on that particular day. First, I take an intellectual approach when students learn a new piece. I expect students to understand historical background of composer and piece before they actually read music notes. For 5 to 6 year old beginners, I create an individualized lesson plan based on observing the student's learning style, strengths and weaknesses as well as personality. For the first 4 or more lessons, this includes my own big-note, large-symbol work sheets and simple songs. Next, and with older or more advanced students, I use a combination of lesson, technique and performance method books (Faber, Bastien, Hal Leonard), a scale/chording book and adjunct material consisting of songs the student wants to learn such as pop/rock, movie themes, holiday and theme music, and classical, to maintain interest and enjoyment.
