My first experience with teaching was as a 15 year old counselor at a week long violin summer camp in Maine that my private teacher was running. It was a really fun summer of outdoor violin practice, board games, fishing, swimming, watching movies and cooking together. Since then, I have been teaching private lessons and also enjoyed 2 summers teaching at Interlochen. I teach according to each students learning ability and I also love to challenge my students to help with their daily practice time. Depending on the level of advancement , we will determine the materials that is needed for each lesson. If its a beginner they will start on the basic learnings and fundamentals of music to help them better understand the lesson. For beginner students, I will start with theory basics that are foundational to learning and can be directly applied to their instrument. Once they gain a basic understanding of the fundamentals, I will introduce more complete solo repertoire that they can begin to work on. Depending on the interests, learning desires, and level of the student, I will move forward with what interests them, though I may require some classical selections as I believe it to be a style foundational to a great musician. I've seen many instances when kids will stop participating in extracurricular activities due to lack of positive support from those they would expect it from. I am a patient teacher who enjoys working with students of all ages. I played tuba, euphonium, and bass trombone in every ensemble in college and spent time on as the principal player in the top ensemble on multiple instruments. I obtained my Master’s degree in 2016 and immediately began teaching elementary school music. I tend to work with students on a one-on-one basis. I start by showing the student how to get a sound out of their instrument, and then I lead a student through their first scales. I almost always play the piece or scale first, as I have found learning to read music is far easier to learn when the student already has an idea how the music should sound before they try to play the piece.
