Hi! My name is Anita, and I have operated a flute studio in the Phoenix Valley since 2010, and have now moved to Seattle to pursue my Ph.D. at the UW. I also teach beginning-intermediate piano. I was a full-time Band Director for the Glendale Elementary School District in Glendale, Arizona for five years, teaching grades K-8 band and general music. I specialize in teaching beginners, moving quickly to establish a quality of tone and practice procedures to master the instrument for whatever purpose (school enrichment, personal enjoyment, performance, auditions for college, whatever you want to do!)

I love playing drums, and I love teaching others how to play drums. As a recent graduate from the University of Washington's acclaimed jazz program as well as an alumnus of the prestigious Roosevelt High School Jazz Band, I am a professional drummer and teacher with an extensive set of experiences that are both unique and distinguished. Since middle school, I have been lucky enough to perform and tour all over the US and Europe, playing everything from house shows to esteemed competitions and festivals. In addition to being a member of several active local projects, I have performed with the Seattle Symphony; UW faculty members Bill Frisell, Cuong Vu, Luke Bergman, Ted Poor, and Marc Seales; several Cornish faculty members including Jim Knapp, Jovino Santos Neto, and Wayne Horvitz; and celebrated NYC-based players Wynton Marsalis, Tim Berne, Ralph Alessi, and Andrew D'Angelo. Aside from that, I am a co-founder of Table & Chairs, a new Seattle-based record label, as well as a co-founder of the Racer Sessions, a weekly forum and performance outlet for new and improvised music.

I began studying music at age 12.  I began performing music at the same time.  I studied cello, bass, and composition in Los Angeles with prominent professional teachers.  I studied music in Los Angeles and obtained my music degree at the University of Washington (music theory, history).  I am a professional working musician and teacher.

When I was first introduced to music, I had a great guitar teacher named Jonny Rodgers, who offered lessons after school. He nurtured my love of music and interest in it, always giving suggestions and offering new things to learn, but never demanding a set path. He made music seem like a mystery that no one has figured out and that we were working together to learn more about it. As a result, I practiced liked crazy of my own volition and was able to realize my passion for music from a pretty young age, which I'm really grateful for. I would love to give that opportunity to other people interested in music, because it was so valuable for me. I'm very patient and warm and compassionate toward people and have had lots of nurturing influences in my life. I like to see people grow and believe that creative and expressive acts like music, are very fluid and don't have a one size fits all method. I would like to listen a student on his or her level and let that guide the process, and then offer knowledge and suggestions that will help people discover or achieve their goals. It's all about the student and making the process fun to help with the challenge, and letting people see that no ones really knows for sure what they're doing so it's okay to wade in and try whatever you're interested in. As for my playing, I've been playing seriously for about 12 years, or since I was 10, and right now am transitioning into becoming a performing and recording musician. I've gotten lots of helpful feedback from people over the years, who have been very encouraging of me and pushed me toward pursuing music as a career. I'm working on writing and singing now as well. Music is my biggest passion, and I listen and play as much as possible.

Instruments:

Music has been a big part of my life since I was in the third grade when I first joined the school choir. Eventually I migrated to playing Saxophone in middle school then to low brass in high school. After high school, I made the trombone my primary instrument, though I continued to play euphonium and tuba in college in various ensembles. I have had the opporunity to play all over the country including the Latin Jazz Grammys, the Playboy Jazz Festival, Central Avenue Jazz Festival, the IAJE conference, and for the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM). I have also had the honor of meeting music icons and supporters such as Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, Poncho Sanchez, Cacau, Justo Almario, Joe Lavano, Radiohead, Hugh Hefner, Jorge Lopez, Hilary Clinton and Jay Leno.

Caitlyn is friendly, helpful and still holds my high-school aged daughter accountable for practicing. She also makes sure the music technique is mastered correctly during the lessons - they work hard and still have a good time together. I can highly recommend her as a flute teacher. My daughter is very happy & grateful to have found Caitlyn as a teacher.

Our daughter has only been playing the piano since March. Tony replaced our other teacher who had a job transfer and could no longer teach. Tony is fun and encouraging. My daughter is playing Taylor Swift and Christmas songs and is playing the piano more than ever before. Very happy so far with Mr Tony

Andrew is very encouraging and uplifting, but also isn't afraid to tell you your weaknesses. Andrew also is super awesome with scheduling. Fits around your schedule all the time. He really knows what he is doing and can help you reach your goal in the time you would like to. Couldn't have gotten a better teacher, who continually helps me grow and pushes me.

Jessie is the finest musician I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I find her overall concept of approaching an instrument to be both comprehensive and effective. Each technique she has acquired has made it possible for her to tailor her method to a variety of ages and individuals. I cannot speak more highly of Miss Jessie's abilities. Her lengthy and impressive cradecials speak for themselves. I recommend no hesitation in seeking her services!

"I've been taking lessons with Richard for just a little over six months now and all I can say is that he is an amazing instructor. He hasn't followed a set one size fits all script in his lessons but has instead worked with my musical interests and at my pace in a way that is truly valuable. He has also kept things fun, interesting, and engaging even at times when I've felt overwhelmed and discouraged. This is an instructor that is truly adaptable to his students and will make sure that they get the most out of their lessons. I would definitely recommend him to anybody that truly wants to unlock their musical potential."

Dave is a fantastic teacher. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to students that I think is invaluable. At the same time, this does not limit him from working with beginning students. He is very communicative with the parents as far as schedule changes. We are so grateful to have found him!!

After moving from NY and parting from our amazing piano instructor, we thought we couldn't find a piano teacher close to what we knew. We are happy to say Musika matched us up with someone professional and friendly who enjoys teaching younger students. Thank you! We definitely recommend Kuan as a piano instructor :)

Angela is a phenomenal teacher. She is full of charisma and is a joy to work with. Most of my experience with her has been focused on working in the Alexander Technique and she seems very knowledgeable in this study. I would highly recommend her to any prospective student. I have seen myself improve dramatically in a few short weeks with her guidance (and much practice of course!)

My son enjoys his viola lesson each week with Martina. She is disciplined in her approach to teaching but always makes my son's learning experience enjoyable. She knows how to challenge him and develop excellent form. Martina is always punctual and professional. We both highly recommend her as an instructor.
