Simple breathing techniques, Hal Leonard's Vocal Warmups, is a good book I use for beginners levelsand other techniques will be taught to my beginners. We will discuss each student's goals and what they hope to accomplish in their classes. I will ask each student to sing a couple of notes and songs that I have prepared in order to assess their vocal range (alto, soprano, etc.). With the song of your choice, we will go over tone, vowel placements, translations, and performance enhancers (supporting additional sound, staging, etc.) to make the song your own and better than you have performed before. In most of my lessons, I use one of several piano methods, which I supplement with additional materials, chosen according to the student's musical preferences and goals. My preferred courses for beginning students are Alfred, Faber and Bastien. I always include music theory, as it is fundamental to appreciating and understanding the music, and it allows students to learn the basics of improvisation. My teaching experience began with giving private lessons in 1997. My teaching methods and training have further developed through clarinet pedagogy workshops and classes. Performance experience includes formal recitals to complete my undergraduate degree, and playing with ensembles such as the Portland Wind Symphony, Oregon Sinfonietta, Portland Community Wind Band, Northwest Wind Symphony, Opera Theater Oregon, Oregon Symphonic Band, North Coast Symphonic Band, Astoria Music Festival and a variety of small chamber ensembles. For those students who are children and are just starting out, I'll have them work through a lesson book that I find fit for them so they can grasp the fundamentals. Once they establish the fundamentals, I'll assign them solo repertoire so they can begin learning their own pieces. For older students, I'll find out what they are interested in learning and go from there. Some examples of a main focus for piano lessons may be to learn a specific genre of music, learn how to compose original music, or improve their technique in an existing realm of music. Read More

I began teaching about three years ago. I mostly have taught younger students, and I love to watch them learn and develop a passion for music. I like to look for fun ways to keep students motivated. I like to use lots of humor while I teach because I think learning should be fun, and music is an amazing art.
