Your lessons are about what YOU want! My goal is to keep lessons fun and interesting while helping you achieve your goals. I rarely give technical exercises, instead I like to give students songs that they enjoy which will challenge them and keep them moving forward. Lessons are not regimented, but loosely planned. I am a relaxed and easy-going teacher. I am good at staying focused but also fun to be around! I know that learning to play an instrument carries a unique set of challenges for each person, and these can be frustrating. Because I've experienced these challenges myself, my primary goal is to be there for my students, guiding them through the difficult moments as well as the joyful. As a violist, I maintain an active performance career with orchestras such as Symphony Tacoma (Assistant Principal), the Sarasota Opera Orchestra, Oregon East Symphony, and others. My journey has taken me from early experiences with the Metropolitan Youth Symphony and Oregon All-State Orchestra to international stages in Austria and Canada, with a foundation in both classical and jazz traditions. I taught private lessons during my time at college. About a year ago, I started teaching vocal lessons online after instructing family, friends, and students for over two years. And most recently, I've been a choir teacher, conducting a children's choir. We travel around the city to local schools, have recitals, and spread our joy of singing. My experience teaching begins in 1997 after returning to America having spent 13 years in Africa. I began with just 4 students but after short time (and a lot of word-of-mouth recommendations) my studio grew to over 25 students. As far as methods, I do not believe that there is one system that will work for every student, and so I try to find the right combination for each individual.  For piano students I begin with a combination of Alfred and Faber method books, and also teach different scales for technique.  For voice students I try to pick a combination of vocal exercises, classical music and contemporary music based on the student’s unique voice.  Students learn best from music they are passionate about.  What is most important is finding the right songs for each person.
