For over 47 years I have played and instructed guitar. I began playing back in September of 1967 at the age of 10, on an inexpensive acoustic guitar purchased by my father from a pawn shop. I am self taught and learned to play by watching other guitarists, reading guitar instructional books, and listening to record albums. In high school I had the great privilege of being selected as the Principal clarinetist in the Minnesota All-State Band. We performed at the summer camp designed for these groups and recreated our performance at Orchestra Hall, home of the Minnesota Orchestra, the following spring. Clarinet is my primary instrument and first love. I also teach saxophone and beginning flute and hope to add other woodwinds in the future. When I teach a new student, I like to get them playing something fun first! I love to have my students playing a basic 4/4 rock beat by the end of the first lesson. Drumming is so much fun, so lets not get right into the rudiments and technique RIGHT away! I hope to instill a joy and passion for music in my students. Through our work on fundamentals and etudes they will learn the skills they need to truly express themselves when they perform. I always try to ask the student what the scene of a movie would be if they are playing the soundtrack, and get them to convey that when they play. My experience goes back all the way to my college days at Southwestern Assemblies of God University. At Southwestern, I studied with Tim Pope, drummer for Ray Charles. After college, I had the opportunity to teach drums at Southwestern for 2 years as a adjunct faculty member. I then went on to teach at Fort Worth Christian School for 5 years and worked with all their students including their drum line. While at Fort Worth Christian, I was able to win multiple awards including best snare line and best front ensemble at TAPPS competition. Read More

For students who are young with no musical background I start with the Essential Elements series. At the next stage, I challenge the student based on their interests. I tend to push students to learn jazz, as its the basis for all drum set playing, but know that most kids are more interested in other more modern styles and accommodate them accordingly.
