Instruments: Piano Trumpet Saxophone Clarinet
For beginner students, I typically start with rote lessons that teach the basics of the instruments. Then, I move into performing basic, pedagogically-appropriate scales, and begin curriculum in the Rubank Elementary Method books. For more advanced students, I usually have them start with the intermediate or advanced method books, and we learn more advanced major and minor scales, followed by arpeggios and chords (if on piano.) Overall, my main objective is for students to have fun and make meaningful connections. Read More

Hi! I'm Kurt, singer-songwriter/composer, a multi-instrumentalist, and a patient and natural teacher. I've been playing guitar for over 20 years, piano for almost 20. I release music as "The Broadest Blue"; I am in the process of recording my second album--the first (plus two singles) are available on all streaming platforms. I've played every little bar venue in the East Village, directing a complex musical outfit built to play music with brass and string parts (all music, lyrics, and arrangements written by me). My full name is Johnathon Bentley K. (JBK), but I just go by Ben. I recently graduated from NYU with a master's in vocal performance, concentrating in musical theatre, and an advanced certificate in vocal pedagogy. While there, I taught voice lessons as an adjunct professor. I also have a BFA in theatre performance, concentrating in musical theatre. I include all that to demonstrate two things. 1) I have done extensive research on the voice. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I always start with fundamentals in music thoery, then are then applied to the first exercises (Beyer and Czerny) and beginner-level pieces. Once the young student is ready, I will discuss about his or her personal taste, and find solo pieces that are suitable for the level acquired, but also enjoyable. For adult students, I usually discuss about the level and goal they would like to reach. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
For all my students I design a fun atmosphere where they feel comfortable, stimulated and encouraged to absorb musical knowledge. Depending on their musical backgrounds and their ability I discuss with my students and their parents(depending on student's age) what is their primary goal to achieve during the lesson, what style they want to concentrate on. When we get to know each other I assign my student with Vaccai classical tune (practices vocal technique) and two songs in style preferred, when a student learns and masters these we move on, with more difficult tunes each time.
