During a typical lesson I will hear the pieces my student was practicing the week before, make corrections or suggestions and have them play the piece again. Then I will assign them new pieces and have them play through them making sure they understand what to do and explaining any new concepts and giving suggestions on how to practice. With teaching students, I like to start them out with Dozen A Day as this helps warm up their fingers and hands to get ready for the music in their lesson. After that I will start them on going over the name of the notes that are on the piano as well as the scales. I like to work with them on the basics such as the note values, the different music symbols such as the treble and bass clefs, what is on each measure of music. Read More

I don't believe there is one absolute method and encourage my students to find whatever sparks musical joy in them, so I can help them pursue that. I can learn so much as a teacher by being shown what makes other people creatively stimulated. This is one my favorite parts about teaching! I can provide the knowledge and exercises to build a strong musical foundation, but it is up to the student to use these skills to express their own musicality and to access all the of the music they love on a deeper level.
