I teach through positive reinforcement and encouragement with a set structure that allows for discipline and certain benchmarks that can determine success and mastery of certain skills. I truly believe that when students are nurtured and given a comfortable space they will excel as creating music and art is vulnerable and requires the student to let go. This cannot happen unless the teacher facilitates an environment and space for organic innovation by the student. Read More

I've been teaching for a total of three years now. In that time I've had many different students and picked up on many different teaching techniques as a result. My experience is mostly with late elementary school students but I have also taught middle school and early high school students as well. I would consider myself most proficient in teaching those with little to no experience, but I truly enjoy teaching those who already have goals in mind when they first walk through the door as that is the starting point from my perspective. For beginners I like to have a method books such as Alfreds or Hal Leonards and occasionally supplement with an easy piece to hold their interest. Its important for them to have something to show as soon as possible. As the student advances, the Mickey Baker books are good for the interested jazz student. My style is very relaxed and fun and I make the lessons very student focused. I do not believe in a 'monkey see monkey do' style where I simply show the student and have them repeat the concept or technique, but rather a discovery learning approach where I provide the needed support for the student to learn and apply the concepts. I also provide incentives such as rewards for practicing a certain number of hours a week. Read More

I believe that experiencing music on deep levels provides for a more extensive enjoyment of life itself and teaching ,being a profound musical endeavor, always keeps us fresh and excited to learn new things ! Each lesson that I have is no less important than any gigs that I may play and I see lessons as a chance to share the gift of musical experience. Read More

My ultimate goal in teaching music students is to develop players who are intrinsically motivated. This is a long-term process which I enjoy guiding. I'm very interested in the psychology of motivation for each individual student, realizing that what "works" with one student may not be effective with another. I enjoy developing a relationship with individual students which is based on more than our involvement in music. I'm a firm believer that teaching individual lessons is about more than just music; it's a special one-on-one, teacher-student relationship which can have a positive, life-long impact. Read More
