Along with that, over the summer I also teach the front ensemble for Washington High School. And am currently teaching front ensemble for Western Frederick Indoor Percussion. My methods are largely based on learning the basics of theory and how to apply it intuitively in music (no matter what genre). I teach this at a patient pace, with teaching diatonic scales first, then transcending those scales into arpeggiated patterns. I love to see my students overcome challenges in music. My music teacher used to say, "nothing is hard, or difficult, just challenging." If students learn how to practice effectively on their own, learning new music becomes easier over time. I teach my students how to approach a certain rhythm, phrase, or fingering and the techniques to do so correctly such as by slowing down and practicing with a metronome, our muscle memory will be able to play it up to speed once it's learned. With beginner students, I am starting from the fundamentals and using books: Essential Elements, Suzuki Book 12, one and two octaves scales and etudes by Kreutzer, Wohlfahrt, and Mazas. For all of my students, I am always trying to find the repertoire that they would enjoy to practice.
