2017-2019 - Johns Hopkins University Peabody Institute Artistic Excellence Award

2018 - Johns Hopkins University Peabody Institute Clara Ascherfeld Award

Overview:
I am a Taiwan-born pianist based in Maryland, USA. My commitment to music is driven by a passion of infinite potential in Collaborative Piano. I am committed to creating many events which combine various genres of art. The reason for this determination is because I believe there is a strong connection between different art forms, and I love the way that I am able to perform music with new ideas. My work encompasses classical lied accompaniment, sonata-duo, piano trio, and collaborations with dancers. I am a Collaborative Piano Fellow at The Aspen Summer Music Festival and Fall Island Vocal Arts Seminar. My other summer engagements have included The Collaborative Piano Institute, Domaine Forget International Music Festival, and Todi Music Academy. Notable performance engagements include projects with Johns Hopkins University Peabody Opera and Todi Music Academy. I am a graduate of Johns Hopkins University of Peabody conservatory, where I obtained duo Masters in Collaborative Piano and Piano Performance, and Graduate diploma in Vocal Accompanying. I am the recipient of the 2018 Clara Ascherfeld Award in Accompanying from Peabody.
EXPERIENCE
I taught piano, cello, and music theory for 10 years, both privately and in schools. I always encourage students to seek out and explore music that they enjoy and wish to master. I have taught students of all ages and can provide to each individual's needs. I've prepped students for auditions, entrance to music schools, competitions, and I've taught complete beginners. I can also teach lessons in either English or Mandarin Chinese. I also run studio recitals yearly and help my students rehearsing with the pianists to make their music complete and bring them up to their fullest performance level. Looking forward to helping you discover your musical talents!
METHODS USED
My goal with each student is to specialize each lesson to each student's needs and give students the tools to be able to play the music they enjoy. For all of my students, both children and adults, I incorporate theory, technique, ear training, and musicality into the lessons. For beginning piano students, I use a combination of books from Alfred's and Faber. At the same time, I emphasize proper finger technique, shape, and position. For more advanced piano students I prefer a combination of exercises from Hanon, Czerny with playing classical piano solo repertoires. All students are invited to perform at studio recitals once every six months. Other performing and competing opportunities are discussed on an ongoing basis.
LESSON STYLE
I am a very friendly teacher who has lots of passion for teaching! I encourage my students to embrace their unique characters and treat them with care and love. my teaching style is to create a space for each individual student where they feel safe. I want my students to be able to express their frustrations, or express what they need me to change in my teaching style, or be able to experiment and have fun! I am confident that with my help, my students will not only fall more deeply in love with playing piano, but also become more confident in performing. I currently have a studio with students of all ages (4-80), levels, and genders. Seeing their amazing progress each week is always so encouraging to me!

My 4 years old daughter loves Pei-Hsuan! I highly recommend her! Pei-Hsuan understands how to engage kids and get them interested in music and piano. She tailors the lesson to fit kids’ short attention span and keep them focused. Pei-Hsuan is encouraging and patient. My daughter is a sensitive girl with a big ego. Pei-Hsuan recognizes her improvement and points out her mistakes in a positive way. My daughter just completed her first recital. I’m so proud of her and I feel so lucky to have Pei-Hsuan as her teacher.

Although I was skeptical about how a remote lesson would work, the set-up worked and I loved my session. Pei-Hsuan is EXTREMELY patient, clear in setting expectations and need for discipline, and I can't wait for my next lesson!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
