Each student is different and as such, each student's approach to learning music is different. While still addressing your personal goals, I work to help you achieve those goals and interests, but also utilize my own experiences in teaching to foster deeper growth. I focus on exploration, keeping the study interesting, all while understanding that each student can be at any level, and learn at any speed. I believe that both talent and potential must be met with effort for growth to be achieved, and that all students need some form of discipline and encouragement and make sure to serve both at every lesson. Instruments: Piano Saxophone Flute Clarinet
I like to play audio/recordings for the students when possible, so that the student has an idea of the style, or the piece that we are studying. This gives them something to reference to, but also gives them an aural aspect in their playing/practice habits. I also model for them constantly, so that they get more visual and aural reinforcement. I sometimes give them short music concept/vocabulary assignments, such as learning the names of the notes on the staff, counting rhythms, meters, etc; all having to do with music theory and musical concepts that can be directly applied to their practical aspect of playing. Instruments: Piano Trombone Synthesizer Keyboard
I began teaching back when I was in high school. I distinctly remember helping the younger trombonists at the grade schools and helping lower classmen as I got older. By the time I was a senior in high school I had several private students and I have been teaching routinely various students ever since. I intend to use my own experience and connections within the musical realm as a guidance tool to my students. Read More
Instruments: Piano Cello
If teaching the 'cello, I like to use the instruction book that I learned from which is Samuel Applebaum's Beginning Strings book and around this I will introduce more international music, often in duet form to help with intonation. After the student develops good basic technique, then sonatas and concerti are gradually introduced. If teaching the piano, then I make sure that Dozen a Day for the beginners is incorporated with any of the beginning/intermediate books such as John Thompson's, Edna Mae Burnam's or Frances Clark's methods and for more advanced piano students the Hanon exercises are included along with the standard Classical repertoire. Instruments: Voice
I believe that lessons should be fun! I had to overcome a lot of stage fright when I was a beginner, so it is important to me that the lesson environment is fun, low-pressure, and encouraging. I check in with my students frequently to see how they are feeling about trying new exercises and techniques, if they are understanding the skill I am teaching, and how they see themselves making progress.
