I follow a fairly simple teaching philosophy: Work and Play! I like to divide my lesson time into two segments. The first segment will be strictly technical studies and exercies (eg. scales, drills, theory, etc..) related to the piece I'll be teaching in the second segment of the lesson. Read More

The ultimate goal is always to have a student who is moving forward, reaching realistic goals, and developing a passion for music. I set goals for the next lesson, the end of the quarter, and long term for my students. These goals are set with the student as well so we are moving together as a team towards their next step. I have found that by setting reasonable expectations, setting milestones in which to reach, and by letting the student know ways to measure reaching those mile stones we are able to tailor the instructions to the wants and needs of that student. I've been teaching on and off for about the past 10 years. I graduated from Mcnally/Smith College of Music in 2005 and have been teaching ever since. Sometimes my schedule has been more focused on performance as I have done national tours and exstensive recording but I've always been passionate about teaching. I've always enjoyed watching the "lights turn on" as someone gets a new idea or concept and the doors open for them creatively. Read More

In my piano classes I use the Bastien piano method beginning at the primer level for the children. If they have had previous lessons, I am more than willing to continue with their current method. For adult piano students I use the Older Beginner Piano Course by Bastien. Again, if they wish to continue with previously studied materials, I am more than happy to comply with that. For voice students, the music is geared to the individual. Read More

Through the years, I have compiled sheet music that I wrote out myself of songs that were hard to find/and easier to read. I have hundreds if not thousands of these songs. I start beginner guitar with Neil young songs because they are slow and use basic chords. Also a Pink Floyd song. It has worked for years. From there I teach a Bob Dylan song and sweet home Alabama. I began teaching music while in college after a peer approached me looking for voice lessons in order to improve her ear training skills. I immediately enjoyed facilitating and witnessing the progress of my student and decided to take on additional students. When I moved to Colorado, I was making music more and more and missed teaching. That's when I was given the opportunity to teach a 2-month course in music production to students with very limited music experience. Read More
Instruments: Piano Drums
Although I have taken several college classes in music -- everything from music theory to Garage Band (music software) -- most of my education as a musician, and as a music teacher, has come from real-life musicians! I've personally grown up with many excellent piano players, drummers and singers, so I've been taught by the best. My first love was piano, and currently I sing and play the drums in my church choir.
