My approach varies depending on the student's skill level and chosen instrument, but for beginners I always try to get them familiarized with their instrument: teaching them the basics of reading music and how to navigate the different keys (or strings, etc.). Also at this time I began teaching private students the electric bass guitar. At SUNY Fredonia I began teaching double bass lessons to non-music majors focusing equally on classical, jazz, and folk traditions. It shows me that they not only understand the material, but that they care about what it is they are learning by striving to improve. I also believe it's important for them to feel that what they are participating in is a worthwhile activity that is not only fun but rewarding to explore. Once student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for the recital performance. I started teaching in college when I started the ukulele club. I taught group classes once a week for up to 40 students as well as some private lessons. The ukulele is an easy instrument to learn even with no prior musical experience and can be learned at any age. It is a small yet versatile instrument that can be transported easily and won't break the bank to buy. I have a ukulele in every room and I always take one with me when I travel. Read More
