Hello! My name is Nic, and I'd like to be your student's next piano instructor! I'm a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Go Huskers!), although I hail from Minnesota originally. Over the last several years, I've been instructing students on piano and performing at outside engagements for clients. For beginning trumpet students, I start with a combination of Clark and Arbank Technical studies for a formal structure. A majority of the technical teaching I do is based on these two methods. I also implement techniques from the Sheridan and Pilafian Breathing Gym to establish the fundamental mechanics of generating sound. I have taken private guitar and piano lessons since 2003 and have implemented a lot of the styles I was exposed to in the teaching that I have done since 2017. For beginning students I like to start with the Standard of Excellence book 1. Getting through that book we would advance to Rubanks Advanced Method Vol. 1 book. Perfecting the sound and tone is key to making a piece of music sound good followed by inputting expression and giving it color to a piece making it have more characteristic than just a piece of music. Award-winning trombonist, Blake M., originates from Eastern Iowa. A performer of both jazz and classical, Blake has performed in many national and international festivals and contests including The Grammys, The Music For All Festival, The Sienna Jazz Festival, The Monterey Jazz Festival, The Montreal Jazz Festival, The Jazz Educators Network Conference, and the Iowa City Jazz Festival. Blake received the top soloist award 3 years in a row at the Iowa Jazz Championships and was a member of the University of Iowas Johnson County Landmark Band during his last two years of high school.
