I’ve been playing drums for about 35 years. I’ve toured the entire US including some European countries. I’ve been on record labels, played many live shows of all types. I’ve also c-written songs, produced, engineered, and performed on quite a few successful albums. I started drumming in the 5th grade and continued through high school. Blake has performed as part of the Grammy Jazz Band, Jazz Band of America, Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, Iowa All-state Jazz Band, Iowa All-state Band, Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra, The Symphony of Northern Arkansas and the Brubeck Jazz Colony. Blake recently graduated with his masters in trombone performance from the University of Arkansas where he served as a teaching assistant to the trombone studio. For beginning students I like to start with the Standard of Excellence book 1. Getting through that book we would advance to Rubanks Advanced Method Vol. 1 book. Perfecting the sound and tone is key to making a piece of music sound good followed by inputting expression and giving it color to a piece making it have more characteristic than just a piece of music. I have been teaching music in earnest in some capacity for the past five years. I worked as the music intern for a church where I would lead choir warmups and rehearsals, and from there I got my first flute student - a lovely soprano who was roughly 70 years young and had played flute in her high school days. For beginning trumpet students, I start with a combination of Clark and Arbank Technical studies for a formal structure. A majority of the technical teaching I do is based on these two methods. I also implement techniques from the Sheridan and Pilafian Breathing Gym to establish the fundamental mechanics of generating sound. I will help young students learn the basics of drumming from rudiments, technique, and sight-reading. For more advanced students I am able to guide them into more complex topics such as musical creativity, feel, and improvisation.
