For beginners, I use Rebecca Simonfalvi's called "Potential Contender." It is geared for young children starting out in band. For adults, I generally move between Trevor Wye's "Beginners book for the flute" or the Rubank Elementary Method. If needed, especially with the young, I generally have my students take notes of lessons. I also teach basic theory to give students a deeper understanding of the music. I teach a predominantly Suzuki as I learned with the Suzuki method and I am trained as a Suzuki instructor. I don't completely immerse my students with the Suzuki method and while learning how to play by ear, I teach students how to read music so that they are able to compose their own music. Read More

I will first understand what direction the student wants to go musically, whether it be playing chords and singing or being entirely a solo guitarist. From there we can understand what style they want to be playing as I would encourage having a basic understanding of all musical styles. I will also encourage them to have a basic understanding of music theory, for I believe this to be very important in order to understand concepts of music and be able to communicate them. Read More

Once the student has begun to learn how to sightread and grasp the fundamental elements, I begin to introduce a repertoire suitable for the student's performance. For students who are a little bit older and have a little bit more experience I ask them what they would like to learn. I strive to have a positive and friendly relationship with students. Respect of eachother is also important. I teach each student uniquely and do not stick to a "cookie cutter" approach. Everyone has unique physiology and strengths and weaknesses, so each person should be taught according to their specific characteristics. I also try to explain playing processes and ideas clearly to ensure comprehension. I often use analogies, comparisons, and visuals to make teaching concepts more clear. Read More

I was introduced to music early on by my parents. Being classically trained on the piano I started playing and writing songs at the tender age of seven. My early piano influences are Mozart, Beethoven and Gershwin amongst others. Growing up, I became even more influenced by Pop, R&B, Funk, and Rock artists from the likes of  Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Prince.
