I typically start each student off on a series of lesson books to help structure their learning in an academic way. However, I highly encourage bringing in classical pieces and students picking pieces of their own and bringing them to me to go over and learn. I’ve found that this keeps the students highly motivated and passionate about their lessons and practice. For beginners, the books are highly recommended, but for more advanced students who have finished the books, we begin classical technique exercises meant to help with the increasing level of difficulty of their songs. In my experience, the best way for beginning students, and how I start my method, is to first make them aware that they can develop their abilities and this is done starting with activities that are far from tedious and that on the contrary fill their initial expectations In order to foster taste and love for music and especially for the instrument they want to learn to interpret. As you begin to see your progress, it is at that moment that you begin to apply the fundamental theoretical concepts and that give rise to the progress of the student. Read More

At Northwestern, it was my responsibility, on top of earning my degree, to teach lessons to non-music major students. These student came from all backgrounds and experience levels, and their fields of study included math, computer science, drama, and more. Along with my other students, who I've taught privately for years, they all made improvements in performance practice, musicianship, and, of course, their voices. The principles of singing are universal for every voice, and their so simple that adjustments are easy to make based on voice type, experience level, or any other factor. Read More
Instruments: Bass Guitar
For beginning students I like to focus attention on fundamental technique on both hands, making sure that they use the correct finger positioning on the bass. As they advance, the student will begin to know the whole fretboard through scales and arpeggios (in all keys) so the student knows where all the notes are in the instrument. For intermediate to advanced students I recommend books like "Connecting Chords with Linear Harmony" by Bert Ligon, "Fingerboard Harmony for Bass" by Gary Willis, "Funk Bass Fills" by Anthony Vitti, "The Latin Bass Book" by Oscar Stagnaro and "The Essential Jaco Pastorius" by Jaco Pastorius.
