If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I always understood the connection from one to the next... When I started on the (alto) saxophone, I learned about other saxophones (soprano, tenor, baritone, etc.) and recognized they all read music the same way, they are all put together the same way and essentially played the same way, so, while there are noticeable differences in size and exact timbre, going from one to the other never phased me. I realized if I understood rhythm, and could read treble clef music, then how many other instruments have that in common. Woodwind instruments basically are fingered left hand on top, right hand on the bottom, with index-middle-ring fingers performing most of the work. Exact embouchure differences are obviously needed to learn from one instrument to the next, but it's not rocket science! This knowledge carried over into brass instruments, and eventually violin - but I have to credit some seriously outstanding teachers I've had! Piano & keyboard is something I have self-taught, and for that - I have one piece of advice: Practice!

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
As a saxophonist of over 27 years now, I have achieved everything I have sought out for (thus far). Humbly, I must also say that as far as I have come, I'm still learning to play the saxophone in terms of there being a lot more work to do to continue to learn new techniques in order to improve. During my first few years, it was mostly about learning to play music that everyone knows and also applying ideas of my own plus influences from other musical works during performances outside of the regular school band scene. Yes, I focuses on intonation, breath control, dynamics, accuracy of rhythm and pitch, steady tempo, scales in all keys, and paying close attention to articulations, etc. but I also chose to play what was in my heart. In high school, I learned how to functionally use the altissimo register, along with other techniques (e.g., flutter-tongue, growl, etc.) In college, I finally mastered the circular breathing technique and not only do I employ in on the saxophone, but also on the clarinet and even the oboe. I find this particular technique most useful when sight-reading through fast-tempo music that has little to no rests in which to take a normal breath, so instead of breaking up the continuity of sound during these passages, I am comfortably able to perform all of the material that the piece warrants and supply my lungs with much needed oxygen as I proceed.

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
As a musician of over 27 years now, I have had the blessing to perform with many bands, ensembles, and choirs in New York, California, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Texas. As a fully-certified music educator of 13 years in both New Jersey and Texas, I'm also grateful for leading numerous bands, ensembles, and choral groups...at the height of it all, I'd say I'm still learning to be a better musician--that I've got so much work to do! So many venues, so many musical genres, and I place performance as the cornerstone of what I do as a music educator. If I absolutely had to pinpoint a specific performance, well, I had the rare opportunity to perform with the late James Moody (saxophonist) and his band not once but twice during the Summer of 1996 in North Carolina. The experience inspired me to play saxophone forever!
