Hi! My name is Lauren and I recently moved back to San Antonio after spending 10 years in NYC as a professional musical theater performer. Over the past few years, I've had the privilege of performing all over the country in some of my favorite shows! When I was not on stage, I worked at a reputable music school in Maplewood, NJ called Performers Theater Workshop. Over the four years I worked there, I had many students make their Broadway Debut! I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love for music. In 2017 I graduated with my BA in Music with an emphasis on Tuba from Texas State University. In 2018 I started my graduate work in Jazz Studies at Texas State University and will complete my degree in the Fall of 2019. Currently, I actively gig in the San Antonio and Austin areas three to four times a week with the bulk of my work coming from Jazz and Salsa gigs. Read More

I like to use a fundamental approach so the student can read and play written music as well as learn to play by ear so they might actually get out of the classroom and into a band. Read More

Before the first lesson I always like to inquire with the student (Parent/Guardian) if the student has taken lessons in the past, in order to better teach, and assign practice material. However, if a student has never taken lessons before, I recommend to young students the Alfred's Basic Piano Lessons Book 1, and for my adult students I will send supplemental materials via email, but also encourage that they purchase in the future, "Essential Piano Repertoire" Level two by Keith Snell. I primarily teach piano, drum set, and percussion lessons through both in-home and online formats since 2019. Through my experience teaching these past four years, I have had the pleasure of teaching students of all ages (from 5 to 65 years old) and experience levels. Another passion of mine is instruction at the university level, where I have had two years of experience teaching pedagogy courses for undergraduate students along with coaching and instructing music ensembles. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Legos. This simple child's toy is incredibly helpful for thinking about effective practice on the instrument. Let's say I want to learn a long and complicated run as part of a guitar solo. Instead of tackling the entire thing as a whole I think of it as a bunch of Legos. I learn 3-4 notes which is my first Lego and I get that down perfectly. Then I learn the next 3-4 notes and now I have two Legos that just like in real life I can snap together to make something bigger. I continue this process throughout the entire piece I want to learn. Learn individual Legos, work on seamlessly snapping them together to make bigger groups, and eventually you have the long and complicated run learned and ready to be played!!
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I fell in love with the guitar at an early age as a vehicle for self-expression and an outlet for my artistic passions. There really is no other feeling like being able to make music on such an amazing and beautiful instrument!!
When will I start to see results?
"You get out of it what you put into it" as the saying goes so this is very much tied to the individual student and how much time and effort they put into making their guitar dream a reality. Hard work and diligence will always yield great rewards and the guitar is no exception!!
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
The guitar teacher at the local music store in the mall was a huge influence even though I never took any lessons from him or even met him personally. I still remember watching in awe as he ran through some smoking hot pentatonic runs that blew my young mind though. He was definitely someone who made me say "I want to be able to do that!!" and now I can. Thank you for being awesome Mr. Guitar Teacher I don't know and much respect to you for the influence you had upon my young and impressionable self!!
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
Can they hold the guitar? This is the number one issue for starting young children on the instrument. I usually start lessons at 7 years old because physically that is when the majority of children will be able to hold the guitar. There are always exceptions in both directions and some young children will need a Half-Size guitar to get started. As long as they can get their fingers around the neck and hold the guitar up they should be good to go!!
