Instruments: Voice
I haven't had much teaching experience, but I have worked with teenagers throughout this last year while getting my Associates of Arts degree over at Lone Star Community College. My high school choir director asked me if I would like to start helping out high school students with providing voice lessons, and of course, I said yes. I helped out three seniors in high school this last semester, and two out of the three of them are actually heading to Texas colleges to pursue a career in music. Read More

I believe in age appropriate techniques and repertoire, and use both warm-ups and vocalises, along with accessible repertoire to foster technique and give students the tools they need to think through a song on their own. I follow standard Bel Canto technique for all of my students, then teach modifications for each style. Even my belter students are still asked to sing in their head voice for vocal health and balance. Read More

I started my own studio at the age of 23. I found this to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. In 2000, I entered the Music Education program at The University of Memphis. I continue to teach privately. I have taught children as young as 5 to adults of the age of 72. I have also taught string orchestra for 12 years. After 20 years of teaching, I still have a strong desire to share my knowledge and love of music with others. Read More

My teaching experience, on the individual and private level, goes back to my college days where I would tutor other students in piano to pass their keyboard barriers. While in the active duty military (I'm retired now), I provided private lessons to children and adults in my available time. It is important to remember that a student's individual practice time is invaluable; the lesson time is NOT supposed to be the first time to be reviewing an assigned piece! Read More

I have studied vocal performance for about 15 years now, and I've got experience teaching all styles, from classical and musical theater to rock, pop, jazz, country, and various folk styles. I have had years of dedicated study to performance techniques, general musicianship skills, and the mechanics of the the singing process. I have over 75 Five-Star reviews across various online platforms that speak to my effectiveness, and many of them note my attention to detail and warm, welcoming environment. Read More

I've very goal oriented. I want to have a direction to steer the student towards. No point in teaching reggae parts to somebody who wants to play classical music. Most of it is a little bit of good sense, a little bit of exploring some different kinds of music and a little bit of practice. Read More

I started teaching back in college. I had a private studio of violin and piano students. I then took on after school strings classes as well as maintaining my studio. I graduated from college in 2006 and then I bagan my career for the next 7 years as an orchestra director in the public school system, which I enjoyed. I realized that my true passion was teaching private lessons and having my own students. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Legos. This simple child's toy is incredibly helpful for thinking about effective practice on the instrument. Let's say I want to learn a long and complicated run as part of a guitar solo. Instead of tackling the entire thing as a whole I think of it as a bunch of Legos. I learn 3-4 notes which is my first Lego and I get that down perfectly. Then I learn the next 3-4 notes and now I have two Legos that just like in real life I can snap together to make something bigger. I continue this process throughout the entire piece I want to learn. Learn individual Legos, work on seamlessly snapping them together to make bigger groups, and eventually you have the long and complicated run learned and ready to be played!!
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I fell in love with the guitar at an early age as a vehicle for self-expression and an outlet for my artistic passions. There really is no other feeling like being able to make music on such an amazing and beautiful instrument!!
When will I start to see results?
"You get out of it what you put into it" as the saying goes so this is very much tied to the individual student and how much time and effort they put into making their guitar dream a reality. Hard work and diligence will always yield great rewards and the guitar is no exception!!
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
The guitar teacher at the local music store in the mall was a huge influence even though I never took any lessons from him or even met him personally. I still remember watching in awe as he ran through some smoking hot pentatonic runs that blew my young mind though. He was definitely someone who made me say "I want to be able to do that!!" and now I can. Thank you for being awesome Mr. Guitar Teacher I don't know and much respect to you for the influence you had upon my young and impressionable self!!
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
Can they hold the guitar? This is the number one issue for starting young children on the instrument. I usually start lessons at 7 years old because physically that is when the majority of children will be able to hold the guitar. There are always exceptions in both directions and some young children will need a Half-Size guitar to get started. As long as they can get their fingers around the neck and hold the guitar up they should be good to go!!
