Instruments: Guitar
The lesson material is completely dependent on the student. I believe the most important things for someone to learn are keys, chords, scales, intervals and improvisation. For students are just beginning the first step is to learn the notes on the neck of the guitar. The next step is to begin learning intervals that way the student is able to build chords on the neck. From there is goes on to chords then scales and then keys. Read More

I like to use The Drum Set Musician, by Rod Morganstein and Rick Mattingly, as my primer and launching pad, and I strive to show students how to maximize written exercises by building new concepts upon them. This is a great idea generator. If a student comes to me with established interests, I tailor the lessons to those. If a student comes to me as a clean slate, we will explore different styles of music until we find that spark. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice Music
My teaching experience began in high school, as I began teaching children in a group setting. I worked at a children's educational summer camp where I instructed choirs and chorus singers for Musical Theater. During my time at OCU, I taught private voice lessons to students with diverse vocal goals. I have found that the best way to teach singing is to let your students sing! While discussing technique and concepts is important, it can never replace the experience of practicing with your voice. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet
My teaching style is strongly centered around the idea that music is more than an activity, it is a way to communicate life skills from a teacher to a student. The ideas of practicing and performing teach students what it means to be organized, skilled, and hard working. I think that it is important for students to set their own goals, achieve them, and be praised for their success. I also teach the importance of color within music, and how students can learn to create colors from their instrument to create beautiful music. Read More
Instruments: Trombone
I typically begin with fundamentals to get an understanding for what areas of a student's playing need to be addressed. I'll try to correct future problems that are usually caused from poor fundamentals. Following this, we'll take a look at Bordogni etudes to see the student's understanding of time and rhythm. Once I have a good idea of where the student is at, I'll guide the student through the different methods of addressing a problem head on. Read More
Instruments: Voice
Through engaging and interactive lessons, I strive to spark curiosity, ignite passion, and inspire a lifelong love of music in my students. My love of teaching stems from the profound joy of witnessing my students' growth and transformation as musicians and individuals. It's a privilege to play a role in their musical journey, and I am committed to providing them with the guidance, support, and encouragement they need to thrive. Read More

For beginning percussion students who are children, I typically start with Kennan Wylie's Simple Steps to Successful Beginning Percussion and Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals of playing and reading, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I like to find out what what the student is interested in learning, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep lessons engaging and fun, no matter the ability. Read More
