I started playing guitar when I was 12. At first, I wanted to play the rock I heard on the radio (who remembers 96.5 The Mountain???), but as I grew older my interests also grew. I dug into classic rock, then blues and jazz. I also grew more interested in the folk music my dad always played in the car when I was a kid. I studied music composition and classical guitar in college. Read More

I determined that when i would finally get off the road, buy a house, and raise children, the i would afford other young people the type of musical understanding that i was given, outside of the school/conservatory environment. And thats what i do. As a result, many students of mine have been given scholarships and grants equal to, or exceeding the cost of their education at such esteemed places as Juilliard, Berkeley School of Music, Peabody Conservatory , Capital University, Cincinnati Conservatory, andthe University of the US Virgin Islands. I teach through positive reinforcement and encouragement with a set structure that allows for discipline and certain benchmarks that can determine success and mastery of certain skills. I truly believe that when students are nurtured and given a comfortable space they will excel as creating music and art is vulnerable and requires the student to let go. This cannot happen unless the teacher facilitates an environment and space for organic innovation by the student. Read More

First I try to set goals and learn more about the student (schedules, passions, goals, etc.). Then I focus on the basics. The first lesson almost never results in the ability to play anything because it's so important to avoid practicing with improper technique. First the student must learn hand position, how to support the guitar, how to hold the pick and more before a note can be played. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals I move on to a simple song in the category of music that I know they'd like to focus on. Read More
Instruments: Piano Trumpet Flute Keyboard
Fundamentals are key. For all ages and all instruments, you will be working on scales, chord progressions, transposition and reading of music for piano; scales, lip slurs, technical etudes, long tones, transposition and reading of music for trumpet; and scales, slurs, technical studies, transposition and reading of music for flute. For all instruments, there will be one key book that will cover everything you need to know. If you work with me on a longer term, getting the book would not be a bad idea so you can practice at home, although it is not required by me. Read More
