After I assess the ability level, I find level-appropriate method books, scale studies, etudes, tone exercises, sight reading, and solo repertoire. Upon this time I studied a full year with James Lee Thorpe whom eventually played, toured recorded with Sweet F.A. They released albums with MCA Chrysalis Records. For beginning students I typically start them on just the snare drum by itself. The drum set has a lot of moving parts and I've noticed that kids get discouraged and sometimes quit when they don't pick things up as quickly as they would like too. Once they have an understanding of the fundamentals then we can continue moving forward in their musical development. I always try to find out what the student is interested in, and I guide my instruction accordingly to keep lessons fun and engaging no matter what the ability level may be. Read More
