I've spent time in the elementary music classroom as well as the middle and high school music classrooms. I have teaching experience in the areas of voice, choir, percussion, show choir, guitar, piano, music history, and musical theatre history. It’s important to me that a student has fun in their lessons, but also accomplishes the goals set at the beginning. I start the lesson explaining what we should try to accomplish by the next lesson, followed by a recap of the last one. Goals should be reasonable enough that the student doesn’t feel overwhelmed, particularly at the beginning, yet challenging enough that they feel like they actually achieve something worthwhile each week. Students use the Hal Leonard method book to start, which is a great book for introducing basic guitar techniques and methods. As the student advances more materials and techniques will be supplied to the student, or continue using the method books. For beginning students who are children, I like to start with Piano Adventures by Nancy and Randall Faber. In addition to the method books to introduce music theory I incorporate musical games and flash cards. Keeping lessons fun and stimulating for young students I believe is vital to their growth.
