I start my first lessons by having students play their favorite song. I do this only for students who have played the trombone before. I use this to see what level they are at. For beginners I with the fundamentals and get them playing right away. I have a variety of etudes, exercises, solo pieces and techniques. I teach my students how to perform and to be a professional. For all my students I want to get to know their interests and goals as a musician. I always start with technique and scales with 2 pieces. I always suggest using a metronome and tuner and listening to recordings of the pieces. Physical positioning with the cello is also very important incorrect instruction on posture can lead to injury’s, discomfort and intonation problems. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Suzuki Violin School Book 1. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals on starting on the Violin and learning terms and positions and correct stances, bowings, finger placements, etc... For beginning students who are childern, I use Nancy Faber's Primer and Level One matieral. As soon as they develop a strong foundation using technique, theory, and a basic knowldege of what it means to play piano, I introduce them to a genre that they are passionate about for recital work: whether it is based on a movie, a favorite pop star, or a classical musician. For adult students, I work with Alfred Adult Basic Level One materials which give students a firm grasp on what it means to play the piano, technique, and theory. Read More
