I always teach based of what the student knows and/or what the student is interested in. I teach technical aspects, as well as repertoire and music theory. A healthy vocal sound is our number one priority. I integrate music theory within a students music lessons through their repertoire. Students will become familiar with sight-singing melodies and rhythms of various levels. I will introduce repertoire appropriate for the voice type and technical skill level. Read More

I am from a family of musicians. As a child I performed all over California. As an adult I still perform and teach piano, composition, and voice. I also have been successful in teaching through distant learning so although I am located in California, I am able to reach my students and make a difference in their musical lives. I am an accomplished composer, pianist and vocalist. As a piano student I was asked directly into the piano Masters program at California State University Fresno thus bypassing the bachelor studies. My musical background and experience started my early years. My family and I sang together, in church, in school, and in shows and special events. I began studying singing and song leading with my father at age six, piano with my mother at age seven, and guitar with my cousin at age thirteen. Through the years, my love of music—performing, learning, teaching, and sharing has never waned. My college studies focused on voice, church music, and conducting, and my graduate work emphasized choral music performance, music education, theory, and history. Read More

For older students and adults, I try to discover what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I mostly go based off the Suzuki Violin Method books and will guide my students in correct engagement to playing notes, focusing on dynamics, bowings, and finger note placements along with positions of the hand on the violin. My experience teaching music goes back about 8 years ago when i graduated from High School. Going into college, i began takin on students whom were eager to learn or had an interest in playing music. Seeing how music has had a profound effect on my life, i began to have a passion for mentoring others. For any student, i would recommend they plan out a consistent practicing plan. I always find out what inspires my student and as well as the goals they would like to accomplish. Read More

For beginning students, young or older, I start my lesson by playing a piece for them on my violin. They can listen and observe how I play the violin and how it sounds to them. Then I show them how to hold bow and violin and feel comfortable with the instrument. After time, I gradually introduce music reading and usually use Applebaum's String Builder and Suzuki books. I always encourage listening to great historical violinists recordings to develop a sense of personality, style and tone in the students playing. Read More

I believe that positive reinforcement is the best way to encourage my students to attain the confidence that is needed as a performer. Musical expression is a visceral experience and I strive to create a comfortable environment for my students. Because sometimes learning an instrument can be tedious, I like to break my lessons up with warmup, rudiment, etude and dexterity exercises; Scale and theory practices; repertoire development in multiple styles including original works; and finally improvisation and listening. What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I really love to play music from the Early Renaissance and Late Baroque with everything in between! It is beautiful and thoughtful music. The satisfaction of refining your interpretation is the greatest feeling.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
The natural love of the Music really compelled me to venture out to New areas. This is how I picked up the handful of Instruments that I try to play well.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
I'd love to play Marco Dall'aquilla's 54th Ricercar (which I am practicing.) It is written just after the Medieval period, in the Phyrigian Mode - the mode of the soul.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
Working on Instruments, no doubt. It's hard to imagine myself not involved in music at some capacity. Perhaps if I weren't a player, I'd want to make and repair.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
Certification of Performance and Musical History - It is my life's passion indeed. As a player, I wanted to share music at recitals and small, quiet events.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
First, my practice plan of selected music. Then, a warm up that is based on the given music, both for left and right hand. From there, the music is addressed phrase by phrase as to create smaller pieces of music within the music.
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I prefer to create individual lesson plans as students are all different-minded. However, I do enjoy old literature (1550-1770) about technique regarding Fretted Instruments. (Don't worry, you don't have to speak French or Italian - I will translate ?)
What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
Many Lutenists and Guitarists would agree that consistency of articulation is their premier nemesis! The ability to play in a way that is accurate and meaningful is always the most important and most difficult aspect of playing.
Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
Indeed, many of my students went on to win competitions such as the Young Talent Award, Classical Guitar Summit Championship and Musician of the Year (Junior College)
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I have been fortunate to tour this beautiful country several times, playing in all states (aside from Alaska & Hawaii.) My accolades and monetary gains are very meaningless in the shadow of all the lovely people and country I encountered during those years.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I was very drawn to plucked Instruments my whole life, really. The Lute, my primary Instrument, is basically a time machine or window into another world of absolute grandiose and beauty. I was drawn to it's gentle and bell like quality. It just felt so true and mysterious.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My mentor and dear friend changed my life and view of music. His name is Andreas Martin, and he is the finest musician I know. Although I met him later in my career, it was as if I was renewed musically, setting off on a new journey to Ithaca!
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Having a structure and interior vision of your goals is really important. Playing music appropriate for your level is key, and moving on when needed is sometimes hard to do. I believe this is where a tutor can be immensely helpful. In that regard, practice should be just that - practicing the necessary techniques, fundamentals and observing the correct hand postures are imperative.
