I began teaching lessons in college, and have enjoyed it from the very first day. I try to evaluate each student spefifically and see what they need to improve in the most efficient manner possible. Exercises and drills are present in my lessons, but I alwaystry to teach the bulk of trumpet fundamentals through actual music such as etudes, solos, band music, duets,etc. In this style of teaching, the students can pick what they want to play (after I give them a few guidelines), and we can still target the areas of playing that need work. I usually see what level the student is on and we go from there. The age and interest of the students will also tell me which way to go in the lesson. Usually with beginner students the Hal Leonard book is a good place to start but I'm willing to start with any beginning book. Learning should be fun for everyone! My main question to beginning students is: Why do you want to learn to play the piano? I believe keeping my lesson plans in line with a student's particular passion for music is the key to success. For younger students, I like to use the Leila Fletcher piano books, unless they (or their parents) express a preference for another lesson series. For older students, I begin them in the Trvor Wye Method for Beginning Flute Students. I supplement both these methods with solos appropriate for their level and goals, such as UIL and other competitions. Traditional sight reading, ear training, technique, music theory and the basic fundamentals are essential for developing music abilities. I teach step by step and build slowly so the student learns discipline and also become well balanced in music vocabulary. The students starts off in lesson books with an assignment book to help with consistency with daily practice, as the students mature we can also play the "cool" songs!
