For young beginners, I like to use the Faber and Faber series. They do a wonderful job incorporating reading, listening, and writing into the curriculum. I also think creativity is a huge part of music. I love asking students to write their own songs. When I play their compositions on the piano, their reactions are priceless! My teaching experience dates back to France (2008) when I started teaching music theory to children between the ages of 8-14. I had a class of about 10 or 15 kids and we worked on solfege, theory, and singing. During that time I was also teaching drums in the same school and privately in my house in Normandy, France. I grew up in Georgia fully embracing my band nerd. I started playing the saxophone in middle school and took weekly lessons. This led me to go on to college to study music. The saxophone lends itself to play in all genres like jazz and even classical music. I bring a mix of these into the lessons I teach to help students become well versed in saxophone literature. My teaching experience started the last year of attending Heidelberg University when I was required to instruct a high school student drum lessons as part of my internship. After graduation in 1991 I had my first vocal student in my home. In 1995 is when I had my first experience teaching in a music store environment. The store was known as Howland's Music World and was there until 1997. I started on violin in 4th grade and switched to viola in 6th grade.  I was involved in private lessons, youth orchestras, competitions, City, District, Regional and All State orchestras while I was growing up.  In 1991 I graduated from the State University of New York with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Music.  From there I attended Carnegie Mellon University and received my Music Education Certification in 1995.  I received my Masters in Music in 2000 from the University of Denver. Over the past 13 years, I have taught piano, music theory, and music composition to a diverse group of learners, including school-age children, college students, and adults of distinct backgrounds. From 2014-2018 I received the Graduate Teaching Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, where I led piano courses for non-Music majors, and held weekly recitations and office hours for required courses for Music majors. This encompassed instruction in counterpoint, musical form, harmonic analysis, training students on dictation and sight-singing, as well as providing help with digital audio software. Read More
