Instruments: Piano Voice

During my undergraduate career, I taught lessons to vocal and piano students in the Chicago area. I truly loved working with those students, and I am looking forward to getting back into teaching now that I have settled in Bowling Green. The students that I had in the past immensely inspired me, and I always left lessons feeling positive and hopeful. I am sure that I will be able to find students in this area who can provide me with a similar positive experience. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I am able to teach any genre at any level. Read More

Instruments: Saxophone

I have been teaching students of varying age levels for the last decade. I believe it is essential to remember not all students will learn similar material in an idential manner. I believe it is my job to make sure students are continually enjoying themselves, and that they achieve their goals, whether that is to just have fun or to be accepted into a college music program. I have taught classical, jazz, and contemporary music. Read More

For beginning students who are completely new to the world of music, I typically start them with exercises and theory found in Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. This introduces them to the foundations of the guitar, such as basic chords, chord progressions, and the musical alphabet. Once they have the necessary understanding of the fundamentals, I then like to find out what music the student is interested in learning and apply these foundations in musical pieces they are familiar with. Instruments: Trumpet Trombone Saxophone Flute Clarinet

The best part of teaching is seeing the look in my student's eyes as something finally clicks for them. Helping students grow into independent musicians is my main goal as a teacher. I do this through helping the students understand all of the moving parts of music, like the theory behind what they are playing, so that they are able to transfer their knowledge to whatever music they will work on next. Instruments: Drums

I have three main books I use; these are my drum 'bibles'. Progressive Steps to Syncopation by Ted Reed, Stick Control for the Snare Drummer by George Lawrence, and Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer by Jim Chapin. I like to teach fundamentals first, providing a strong basis with which to expand your repetoire. Then I like to emphasize song work. The best part of drumming in my opinion is playing with other instruments, and in addition to playing with recorded music, I encourage my students to find other musicians to practice and even perform with. Instruments: Clarinet

I believe that every student's learning should be catered to for their individual needs, strengths, and weaknesses. Approaching every student as if they are different than the one previously ensures that there is assessment of needs in every lesson. I believe that every student regardless of their ability level will learn something, and should have the opportunity to learn music. Usually for my younger students, we start with whatever book they are learning from in school, and focus on one new scale or two every week depending on how quickly they advance. Read More
