Overview:
My love of the musical and dramatic arts has led to my passion for singing opera. Over the past dozen years, I have sung, acted, and danced in numerous staged theatre, musical theatre, and opera productions. I recently graduated from Baldwin Wallace University where I was fortunate enough to have sung the principal role of Zerlina in Mozart's D on Giovanni and the lead role of Josephine in Gilbert and Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore. At Bowling Green State University, I originated the soprano role of Nora, in the world premiere of Andrew Selle's opera It Could Be. In April 2014, I made my Opera Chorus debut at The Toledo Opera's production of Gounod's Faust. Through competitive national auditions in February 2014, I was one of 32 singers selected to participate in the OperaWorks 2014 Emerging Artist Program.
EXPERIENCE
I discovered my musical interests and performance abilities through private piano lessons, dance classes, private voice lessons, and musical theatre acting workshops. I began my teaching experience as an assistant instructor/choreographer for the StarBright! Youth Musical Theatre classes at a local community theatre. During my undergraduate studies, I was an opera acting coach at Baldwin Wallace under Opera Director, Benjamin Wayne Smith. I privately coached voice performance students to assist them with role preparation and audition repertoire. The ultimate goal for my students is to help them bridge the gap between studio and performance. I feel it is important to provide my students the necessary tools for them to realize their full potential.
METHODS USED
Anyone can learn to sing through persistence, hard work, and healthy practice. Singing helps improve lung capacity, diaphragm muscles, immune system strength, and relieves stress. Reading and performing music also exercises the same areas of the brain that handle math, language, and critical thinking. For my younger students, I focus on breathing, proper posture, and the fundamentals of music. For my older students, I work on correct technique, languages, musical analysis, advanced repertoire, as well as appropriate repertoire they want to work on. I want to help my students get what they want out of singing in a fun and healthy way.
LESSON STYLE
I love to see my students enjoy learning music and gain confidence as they realize their musical potential. This can only be accomplished in a safe and healthy environment where my students are able to express themselves without fear of rejection or judgement. At the first voice lesson, I have my students list their musical goals and what they hope to achieve. Through positive affirmation, I am able to help them reach their goals and develop a passion for music. I have been privileged to work with many great mentors and have had a variety of rewarding performing and teaching opportunities. I am constantly learning from my students, which helps me to become a better teacher and performer. I hope to inspire my audience, as well as my students.
