I have been teaching professionally for 11 years. Before I began my professional teaching career I already had several years of experience instructing my two younger siblings in violin and cello, even serving as a primary instructor to one of the siblings at one point. I have mainly taught private lessons out of my home. For beginning drum students, I typically like to start with the Percussive Arts Society sheet of rudiments to ensure a solid technical background as the student progresses. After that, we move on to simple reading and other drumming fundamental concepts including limb coordination, fills, phrasing and articulation, etc. With older students, I find it helpful to try and begin with what they are interested and comfortable in playing. I have a strong love of music. I received my Bachelor of Music from East Carolina University and my Master of Music from Anderson University. I have been playing the saxophone for twenty-four years. I have also been a public school general music/band director for five years. I have been teaching saxophone for about twelve years. I am a full-time school teacher and professional musician. For beginner and even some intermediate students I like the Sigmund Hering Method. I also love Embouchure Builder by Lowell Little. For high school players I like to introduce more solo material and advanced method books including The Claude Gordon Systematic Approach and books by Charles Colin, Earl Irons and Herbert Clarke. While i believe there are certain basic of play the trumpet that are accepted worldwide i do not believe there is only one correct method and encourage my students to incorporate several methods to create their own personal sound. I love when I get to see my students fall in love with music and have great passion for it. I take an individualized approach to each student, and I also set realistic goals so they can meet them. I want to make sure students improve, while not getting frustrated or bored. I think it is also important to make sure the student is always having fun, because creating music has to be a choice for a student to succeed. Read More

My teaching style is kind, respectful, nurturing, and encouraging while also demanding. My greatest pleasure and joy in teaching is when I see and hear the student make obvious progress. A trust is built, both initially and over time, where the student and teacher understand the balance between fun and serious study. The teacher may be firm but must never be harsh, and the student must take the lessons seriously enough to practice regularly and thoroughly. Read More
